This will make the 6th year that I plan on running the Pikes Peak marathon in Colorado. I have roughly 4 months from today to get ready. That means lots of hill repeats and the issue of dropping at least 35 pounds by race day. My time goal is hard to set but I would walk away satisfied with 7:45 or better for the trip up and down the mountain. I think that is doable if I am in as good a shape as I was in 2005 or 2007. I’ll have to see how my ankle responds during training on running downhills. That part of the equation I don’t have as much control over. My goal for the rest of April is to loose 8 lbs and start in once a week hill repeats. I don’t plan to up the milage that much yet. I did just over 4.5 miles yesterday around TLT. The weather was ideal, overcast with a slight breeze. So in a nutshell here is where I am headed in this 6 month journey that will culminate at the Marine Corp Marathon.
1. CURRENT WEIGHT 222. Goal weight 175 to 180 range. I ran the 2005 Pikes Peak at 183lbs. and the 2007 at 186lbs. Not suprisingly my 2 best performances. The best shape of my life in many ways was the summer of 2005.The other years I finished on sheer strength of legs and will. Nothing wrong with that, but I want to give my best.
2. TIME GOALS: As I said I would be satisfied with a 7:45 or better at Pikes Peak. I am going to keep my time goal for the Marine corp marathon to myself for now. The thing that concerns me of course is 26.2 miles on road. I know I am carrying too much weight to be pounding on road.I have been fit before and will get there again.
Thanks to my friends who are supportive of me as I chase after these goals. May you all reach your goals this running season as well.
