Baerathon/Cap10k
Thursday, April 2nd, 2009Last weekend was active with 2 races. The Bearathon in Waco on Saturday could have been called the Burrrathon! There were thrity mile per hour winds and the temp at the start was 38 degrees. The race started on the Baylor campus and headed west towards Cameron Park. This marathon reminded me of how good it was to run marathons back in the early 80’s when they were relative small events. The course was a bit quirky in that a portion of it was run on sidewalks. The aid stations were “manned” by very excited Baylor sororities.I thought I would go deaf from their yelling a couple of times. The first 3 miles were straight into the wind. Close to mile 4 we entered into the hills of Cameron park. Cameron Park is really a hidden jewel of Waco thick with trees and rolling hills. Miles 5 through 9 were a real challenge with the numerous hills. I like the hills though. After leaving Cameron Park it was back to running along the Brazos River. We headed toward the University with the wind at our backs!. The highlight of this race was finishing the last 3 miles with a man and his daughter who couldn’t have been over 10 years old. It was so great to see a young person running a 1/2 marathon when we have so many inactive severly obese kids in America today.Try as imight I could not catch her in the last 100 yards. This race was in a way trip down memory lane. I ran my first marathon while a student at Baylor. It was the product of a bet with a female student who didn’t think I could finish a marathon. I won the bet but never saw her to collect.Almost thirty years latter and I’m stillrunning against the wind!!
